The Waverley Castle Hotel ★★★

The location was excellent for my purpose. The room was adequate and clean. The bathroom was tiny and the shower miniscule. Restaurant food well above expectations and the staff professional. Receptionist could do with a bit of welcoming cheer.

Quiet dining room, no music or atmosphere, whispering to have conversation, could hear pin drop, buffet hot breakfast would be good, no information in room, eating times, places to visit nearby etc

Beautiful building clearly being brought back to life. Staff couldn't have been more pleasant. Evening meal while not a huge choice was really good & any problems (requested left off toppings, arrive with them) dealt with in good humour and promptly. Breakfast excellent.

Stayed multiple times in run up to Xmas, some rooms better than others, one (ground floor rear) a bit cold.

Staff were excellent and very helpful. Great location for what we required, Dinner was good but the breakfast could do with improvement, was ok. perhaps up the quality a bit. The Bar was nice and relaxing had a large TV if required and also a separate Games Room with pool table, Darts, books and board games. But I believe its under new management so will be back to see you in the summer.

The room was very Cold and very drafty old windows , no heating in the Bathroom. took hours for the plug in oil radiator to heat the room up. WIFI in the room was very week only 2 bars and it faded in and out, at times there was no connection.

Impressive building, ease of parking

There is nothing to dislike. The price we paid reflected the standard of accommodation. Our stay was for one night, so it met our needs.

Good sized room. Had a few options tea and coffee in the room. Location to tweedbank station was also good to go further afield to Edinburgh. Parking was good although we arrived quite late we could park in the car park.

Not much didn't like. Got a bit confused when stairs ended at a fire door wasn't sure could go through it at first but then was more stairs behind it. Only thing really.

The room was huge and beautiful, The breakfast was yummy and the staff were welcoming! I would recommend to anyone!

Only thing is that the room was too hot and there was no way to air out the room as the windows are drilled shut? And obviously because of the building there’s no air conditioning. Apart from that it was a great hotel and I would stay again!

Good location and easy to find about one mile out of Melrose, plenty of parking available. Small single room was clean and comfortable. Breakfast was O.K., the dining room was busy with coach trips but the staff were keeping the buffet style breakfast well supplied. Overall my stay was good value for the price paid.

Not a complaint but worth mentioning that when there are coach trips staying the bar can be busy and best to have a later breakfast when it will be quieter. Room was fine but corridors could do with a bit of updating.

The location.

Not for the discerning traveller. Reminded me of Colditz Castle with regimented meal times and limited flexibility. No room service due, I was told, to staff shortages. Clean room but very tired infrastructure. A mistake!

Very spacious room with excellent view. Tassimo and a kettle was a bonus. The bed was enormous!! The glass cabinets near reception selling novelty gifts...very handy and not too expensive

Location and cheap but cheap should not mean rubbish service with hotel policies frankly shocking. Building is gorgeous from outside but when you get inside you find a very tired run down old hotel in much need of upgrade

Arrived and sign on reception saying go to bar on first floor, but no sign saying where bar actually was, do you turn right or left! A delivery driver had same problem and he was carrying a heavy package. Just as I was about to go right have already gone left a gruff and frankly rude receptionist arrived in a high vis jacket. “You said you would arrive after 6pm”, no greeting, smile or anything. Asked if I wanted dinner, bar snack or Christmas dinner for £15.50, I chose the latter and offered a 6.15 or 7.15 sitting. A big mistake as coach parties in. Greeted by Santa with a glass of wine but when asking for the wine waiter, 3 times I asked, I was then told “the bar man says go to the bar for a drink”, shocking service. I satisfied myself with water but was told later by the bar man that there is no table service on a Wednesday. The mind boggles. Anyway trying to enjoy my glass of wine in the bar a read some of the reviews and noted one that said there are no toiletries in the room. So back to the room and indeed no toiletries. Down to reception (same woman who not be dealing with people) said you have to ask for them at reception. Unbelievable. I said I would have been upset if I hadn’t noticed until the morning but that got a sigh and nothing else. In the morning the maid knocked, I should 5 mins and I think she said check is 10, it was 9.55 and then she came in anyway. I had a word with later and at least she said sorry. Room dreadful. Do not believe the photos on the web, they must be 10 years old at least because the room I was in, 204, was tired, scruffy and in serious need of an upgrade. OK cheap but the standard is really poor.

Room was quite comfortable

On checking in offered my American Express card said did not accept it yet I booked the room through booking.com good job I had another card. Would not allow me a account to spend at the bar etc. General decor tired, room basic did have a bath that was small ok if you were 5foot or under not 6'2" went down to order food at 6-30 told would have to wait at least 2 hours as they had a coach party in not even a sorry a could not care less attitude, fellow guest who was standing at the side of me when I was told this was amazed was upset as he was part of the coach party, so I did not eat, breakfast was not until 8am but had to leave just after 7am so had no breakfast either, very very disappointing please booking .com take note, So if you are less than 5 foot and part of a coach party this is the hotel for you if you don't fit that criteria please please seek another Hotel

Friendly, efficient staff. Lovely venue with multiple bars and recreation rooms. Clean and tidy rooms. Very good breakfast.

Breakfast didn’t start before 8am to cater for coach parties etc, which was disappointing for business guests or those travelling independently

A very pleasant stay. Staff friendly and helpful. Room looked newly refurbished. Entertainment available every evening although we were too tired to attend! Good choice of hot and cold buffet for breakfast although no obvious vegetarian alternatives ( like veggie sausages or haggis).

Double bed felt very small. And only one pillow each.

Comfy bed in a single room.

No toiletries supplied. Yes, that fact is advertised but it would be better to install a couple of wall dispenser units and pop the room price up a few pence.
